In the ambitious travel poster designs we create, we explore these harmful notions; flawed belief systems; the complexes of superiority and inferiority, racism, superstition, orientalism, chauvinism and xenophobia that make their way into the seemingly innocent postcards with which countries project themselves or other nations with which they connect in the global geopolitical arena. After living in rather dirty and mosquito-infested excavations on Mount Lavinia for three months, from where I travelled by bus to Cinnamon Gardens, I returned to the University of Edinburgh to pursue my MA in English Literature. I profitably exploited what was then free university education in the UK and was fascinated by the study of the canon of literature through the ideological prisms of “colonialism, postcolonialism and the discourse of discovery” and “utopia and dystopia”; through the way Geoffrey Chaucer, John Barbour, William Shakespeare, John Milton and Williams Blake had instilled a mythical sense of place in the “Scepter Island” where I came from (my mother was Scottish-English and my father a Cornish).
